Hans P. Kraus Jr. Fine Photographs, New York, will show a selection of 19th century architectural studies at Art 43 Basel, from June 14 through 17, 2012. The exhibition will feature works by Édouard Baldus, Bisson Frères, Louis-Emile Durandelle, Roger Fenton, Gustave Le Gray, Victor Regnault, William Henry Fox Talbot, Rev. Calvert Jones, and others.
Early British works include a richly toned salt print of Melrose Abbey, 1844, by Talbot, and views of Italy and Malta in the 1840s by Calvert Jones. Roger Fenton's Post House, Kiev, an1852 salt print from a paper negative of a ruggedly romantic couriers' resting lodge, is among the earliest photographs made in Russia.
Remarkable examples of Second Empire architecture in Paris are shown in a mysterious salt print attributed to the Bisson Frères, Façade of a private house, circa 1855, and a rare group of photographs by Durandelle. These are not included in his published series and constitute an early record of the Opéra Garnier construction in the 1860s, with animated scenes of sculptors at work.
